About

Hello! Thanks for visiting my creative space.

My name is Carol and I recently moved to Portland, Oregon. I taught myself how to sew in 2013 using blogs, online tutorials, and books. I am using this blog as a way to showcase my sewing as well as other creative pursuits.

Growing up, I was surrounded by handmade quilts made by my mother and maternal grandmother. My mother has a sewing room full of fabric and as a teenager I would occasionally dabble with making PJ pants or other small projects. It wasn't until I was in graduate school for physics and I needed a hobby to keep me sane that the sewing bug bit me. I bought a sewing machine for my 28th birthday and became OBSESSED with all things sewing.

During my first year of sewing, I picked fabrics I wouldn't normally wear (bright colours, prints), included elements that were not really me (bows, frilly-ness), and bought patterns based on their popularity instead of if it would suit me (pretty much any of the current trendy sewing blogger dresses). I floundered around trying to find a sense of my personal style. Recently, I worked through the Wardrobe Architect series and found that verbalizing what colours, silhouettes, and fabrics work for me, has made my sewing time more productive and the clothes that I make are so much more enjoyable to wear.
